 Arabic Tea Recipe

Arabic tea, or karak chai, is a wonderful and aromatic tea that originated in the Bedouin Gulf. It is a rich blend of tea, flavourful ferments and enhanced milk, giving it a relaxing refreshment that is ideal for any time. The recipe is simple, yet the taste is luxurious and satisfying. Let's discuss how we can make this traditional beverage at home.

Arabic Tea Recipe

Ingredients:

To make 4 servings of Arabic tea, you will need the following:

1.Water - 2 cups

2.Black tea leaves - 2 teaspoons (or 2 tea bags)

3.Whole milk - 2 cups

4.Sugar - 4 teaspoons (to taste)

5.Cardamom pods - 4-5 units, crushed

6.Cinnamon stick - 1 small stick

7.Saffron strands - squeezed (discretionary, for extra aroma and elegance)

8.Cloves - 2-3 (discretionary)

9.Ginger - 1 small piece, crushed (discretionary, for pungent taste)

Steps Instructions:

1.Boil Water and Spices:

Add 2 cups of water to a pan and place it over medium heat.

Add ground cardamom, cinnamon and cloves (if using).

If you are adding ginger, this is the right time to add it.

Let the water boil for 3-4 minutes. This step infuses the water with rich varieties of flavors.

2. Add Tea Leaves or Tea Bags:

When the water is infused with the flavors, add the black tea leaves or tea bags.

Turn the flame to medium-low and let the tea boil for 2-3 minutes. This step makes the tea solid and potent.

3.Add Milk:

Slowly add 2 cups of whole milk to the pan.

Mix slowly and allow the mixture to heat up. Try not to let it boil. Keep the heat on low to medium.

4.Sweeten the Tea:

Add sugar according to your taste. For traditional Arabic tea, 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup is standard, however you can vary this according to your preference.

Mix well until the sugar is completely dissolved.

5.Add Saffron (optional):

For a luxurious touch, add a few strands of saffron.

Saffron enhances the smell as well as gives the tea a rich bright color.

6.Simmer and blend the flavors:

Let the tea simmer on low for 5-7 minutes.

This simmering method allows all the flavors - flavorings, tea, and milk - to meld together well.

7.Strain and Serve:

Using a fine cross section sifter, pour the tea into cups or a tea kettle to remove flavorings and tea leaves.

Serve the tea hot and enjoy its soothing, aromatic flavor.

Serving Suggestions:

Arabic tea is best enjoyed with a light snack such as dates, bread rolls or delicious baked goods.

In many Gulf countries, it is often served with breakfast or at night with traditional sweets such as baklava.

Suggestions for Amazing Arabic Tea:

1.Use New Spices:  For the best flavor, try new cardamom, cinnamon and different flavorings. Stay away from pre-ground flavorings, as they may need to be flavored.

2.Balance the sweetness:  Arabic teas are typically sweet, although you can vary the sugar to suit your taste.

3.Experiment with flavors:  Add nutmeg, star anise or vanilla concentrate to make your tea different.

4.Simmer slowly:  Letting the tea steep longer increases the depth of flavor.

Social significance:

Arabic tea is more than just a beverage; it is a social symbol of harmony and warmth in the Middle Eastern Gulf. Whether served with family, to guests or enjoyed alone, this tea gives a sense of comfort and tradition. Its preparation is often a treasured tradition that reflects the local people's love for taste and flavors.
